Christmas is a long time coming for Al Yanks.
Aged 66 and an artist with no formal track record, the Californian has long been the subject of mock and parody.
But a few years ago, a young fan asked Yank to make an album.
A few weeks later, he gave it a try, with some songs released online.
Today, he’s in the process of making his fourth solo album.
‘It’s like an EP or something,’ he told New Scientist.
‘And I can’t tell you how much fun it’s been.
I’m a pretty hard-core fan.’
But it’s a lot to ask of a fan.
‘I’m not a great singer,’ he admitted.
‘In my early days, I sang in a choir, but it was really bad singing.
I was really shy.
‘But I’ve got this great voice and a great voice.’
Yank is now a multi-talented songwriter and producer with his new band The Shins, who will release their first single on Thursday.
‘We’re trying to do the same thing as Yank,’ drummer Adam Levine said.
‘The album is a mix of old and new songs.
It’s a little bit more like a Christmas album than a normal album.
But the main thing is that the songs are not about me.
‘All the songs on it are about Yank.’
The album is set to be released in March.
